Asthma is a common disease which has many symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Asthma is an inflammatory disease with variable and recurring symptoms that affects the airways and causes airflow obstruction. There are different classifications of asthma depending on the frequency and seriousness of symptoms.

Causes of asthma are not confirmed, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors are generally held to be accountable. The prognosis for sufferers of asthma is generally positive, with common management including the avoidance of triggers such as allergens and irritants and the use of inhalers.

Learn More About COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), occurs when chronic bronchitis and emphysema co-exist within one person. Patients suffering from COPD experience a narrowing of the lungs which leads to shortness of breath and therefore a limitation of the air flow to and from the lungs. Shortness of breath is also known as dyspnea. COPD, bronchitis and emphysema differs to asthma in that its symptoms are very difficult to reverse and are likely to get worse over time.

COPD, emphysema and bronchitis can be caused by smoking or other noxious particles or gas being inhaled. This triggers an abnormal inflammatory response in the lungs.

The diagnosis of COPD requires lung function tests and this study is only open to sufferers that have already been diagnosed with COPD, bronchitis or emphysema.
